MSFV Baby Slushpile First 500

You may remember that last week I was lucky enough to have my query letter randomly drawn (from 125 queries) to be critiqued on Miss Snark's First Victim.

I got a ton of great comments on my query, most of them saying that I need to do some serious cutting and pruning. I thought my query was solid (obviously, or I wouldn't be sending it out to agents) but it turns out it needs some serious work. I'm hopeful that with some revision, I'll start to get more of a response from agents.

Despite its rough reception, my query was chosen by The Authoress as one of her top 5 which means that I have been invited to post the first 500 words of my manuscript!

I've got to be honest, I've been feeling less and less confident about my story lately. Frankly, I'm expecting my first 500 to get torn to shreds.

BUT if it's going to get shredded, I would prefer it get shredded by my blogging family. So please stop by MSFV and tell me what you think!

Thanks!

  1. I think every author is uncertain about their beginning. We hear all the time how important it is and we stress. That's awesome that you've had this opportunity to have it reviewed. I'm heading over to see it.

  2. Having your confidence do the rollercoaster is part of the job description; don't sweat it, it happens to everyone. Write through it. Then write some more.

I think that whatever happens, as long as you keep learning and writing, and know deep down in your heart that you're a writer for life, not just a one-book-wonder, you will smooth the ups and downs and get more out of every word.

Congrats on being picked in the top 5! That's a great opportunity. :)

    1. Thanks for the advice and thanks for the link. I've got a zombie short story that I need to outline and I'm sure your post will help.

  4. You've got the right attitude, Adam. But remember, everyone is going to have a different opinion... so be careful with who's advice you take. With my first book, I tried to take everyone's advice, and it turned into a giant mess, LOL. We know you're talented, that's clear! And because you've got a clear head and a desire to improve, you'll definitely get there. :)
